At Stone Center, we rely on Indiana Limestone for our carvings, and for good reason.
Indiana Limestone is one of the most beautiful natural stones available. Originating in the ocean and made up of calcium carbonate, limestone is one of the more malleable natural stones available today. With this in mind, we utilize this stone and its soft, yet durable surface, to create our custom designs. Easy enough to carve yet strong enough to last through the years, limestone is one of the finest materials for carving today.
Our stone carving business uses a combination of high-caliber tools and chisels to carve a wide variety of stones with precision and accuracy. From steel and carbide tools to avoid damaging softer stones, to flat blade chisels and pneumatic hammers for hard stones requiring more impact, we have the experience to ensure every stone is carved with care.
Our process can be divided into three steps. Let's break it down.
Step 1: Draw a Design
To ensure we create just what you're looking for, we begin each project by drawing a design. At this point, we work closely with you to ensure we are accurately capturing your ideas, drafting and re-working every detail to match your desired finish. For this, expect the team to dive deep into the details to ensure your design can truly be brought to life.
Step 2: Use a Pitching Tool
Pitching tools are used to remove any unwanted stones before creating the design. This will help define the shape of the overall piece, but not the details. Typically, these tools are beveled on one side so they can hit with a sideways motion. With the proper angling and technique, we remove all unwanted stone for a fresh canvas.
Step 3: Define Shapes
Now, it's time to get into the details of your design. For this, we rely on much smaller tools, such as a point chisel that will help create tinier shapes. For some elements, we carve rows or patterns to create ridges, grooves, and other design elements. This is a slow process that requires patience and keen attention to detail by our artists, to ensure every design is accurate.
With years of practice with many different sculpture and carving designs, our team creates every design with keen attention to detail. To see for yourself, we encourage you to explore our previous stone carvings done for a number of different clients and implementations.

This place is awesome -- awesome products, awesome selection but most importantly awesome service. In my humble opinion there are countless companies providing products and selection but few who can deliver on their promises. It’s the service that separates Stone Center from its competitors.
I had the pleasure of dealing with Bill Howard. A seasoned and highly professional salesperson. Bill was patient and very attentive. He listened to what we were wanting to do and offered several great and creative alternatives. Most surprisingly to us we choose one of this options that saved us $$$$. I wouldn’t say Bill was pervasive but rather practical. His sense of humor combined with his passion for genially wanting to help us with our project is what sold us.
Thank you Bill – we will be customers for life.
